BioInnovation Festival Showcases Collaboration and Innovation Across Life Sciences

Last week, the 2025 BioInnovation Festival brought researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, and industry leaders together for connection, knowledge sharing and celebration of the life sciences sector. The festival, delivered by Life Sciences WA, For Blue, AgriStart (Innovation Cluster) and the Aquaculture Council of Western Australia (ACWA), spanned four days and featured a range of events covering health, medical, agricultural, aquaculture, and the broader biological sciences.

As Western Australia’s peak body for the life sciences, Life Sciences WA is a collaboration of representatives from across the sector including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical technology, aquaculture, and agricultural technology.

The festival’s centrepiece, the BioInnovation Conference, took place on Thursday and featured an engaging mix of plenary sessions across two thematic streams: Health and Medical Life Sciences (HMLS) and Ocean and Agriculture BioInnovation (‘Blue and Green’). With over 50 speakers and 250 attendees from state, national and international ecosystems, the event fostered rich discussions on the latest advancements, challenges, and opportunities shaping the sector.

Key Highlights from the Conference include:

  • Hon Stephen Dawson MLC, Minister for Science and Innovation; and Medical Research, provided the opening remarks, emphasising the importance of fostering innovation in WA’s life sciences.
  • The HMLS stream featured discussions on emerging research and technologies in areas such as gut health, Alzheimer’s, prenatal health, and eye health.
  • The Startup Alley, including a showcase by Perth Biodesign, highlighted WA’s growing pipeline of life sciences technologies.
  • Investor reverse pitches highlighted that good investor relationships go beyond just funding and can be a powerful partnership and tool in the commercialisation journey.
  • The event reinforced the role of collaboration and knowledge-sharing in building WA’s competitive edge in the life sciences sector.

The WA Life Sciences Innovation Hub was pleased to have a presence in the Conference’s Exhibition Hall, where we connected with new and existing stakeholders to discuss how we support the commercialisation of novel products in the health and medical life sciences space. The Hub also attended the Future of Food BioInnovation Dinner, sponsored Moderna, which explored the intersection of sustainability, food security, and biotechnology.

On Friday, the festival continued with an Investor Breakfast that provided insights into how to make companies more appealing to investors, an Aquaculture Research, Development & Extension (RD&E) Workshop, and site visits leading into the AdVentures Weekend Pitch Night in Busselton. The weekend concluded with the Down South AdVentures Weekend, providing an opportunity for founders and investors to continue building relationships in the relaxed setting of WA’s South West region.

From scientific discussions to commercialisation insights, the festival provided a powerful platform for founders, investors, researchers and industry leaders to engage in meaningful conversations about the future of bioinnovation in WA.

The WA Life Sciences Innovation Hub remains committed to supporting the ecosystem by connecting stakeholders, facilitating commercialisation, and driving sector-wide growth. We look forward to continuing to collaborating with Life Sciences WA and other-like minded organisations to support the next wave of WA’s health and medical life sciences innovations.
