SA graduates to access new PhD program to advance biomanufacturing industry skills and capabilities
South Australia is leading the way with the establishment of Australia’s first Industry Doctoral Training Centre (IDTC) PhD Plus program, building the State’s capacity and connections in biomanufacturing.
Throughout 2023, two new Industry Doctoral Training Centres (IDTCs) in South Australia have hosted 27 PhD students from the state’s major universities as part of a pilot four-year program.
Focusing on two critical technologies – biomanufacturing and quantum technologies – the IDTC PhD+ Program is part of the South Australian Government’s EXCITE Strategy to support a future-focused workforce.
MTPConnect SA is delivering the biomanufacturing stream of the PhD Plus program conducted in the innovation districts and places, and supporting Adelaide, the BioMed City.
Up to 16 students participated in the inaugural PhD Plus training program in biomanufacturing which commenced in 2023. The program runs in conjunction with a four-year PhD commitment where students undertake real-time health and life sciences research projects jointly supervised by academic and industry leaders.
On completion, graduates will be highly competitive in the market, equipped with broad knowledge of biomanufacturing principles, industry-ready skills required to drive innovation and agile leadership capability to support future-focused biotech organisations. Most importantly, the Program will build the capacity of South Australia’s health and life sciences ecosystem by fostering a collaborative culture and sharing of best practice in a key global growth area.
The IDTC was an initiative from the Chief Scientist of South Australia’s office and is delivered in partnership with South Australia’s three public universities, The University of Adelaide, Flinders University and the University of South Australia.
The biomanufacturing component centres on collaborative engagement between researchers and industry, and a strategic curriculum consisting of bi-monthly sessions featuring guest presenters, site visits, project pitches, reflections and challenges. In addition, students will benefit from industry connections, engagement in AIP activities, such as involvement in regular networking events, roundtables and national training activities.
In addition to covering topics surrounding biomanufacturing innovations, the themes of the program will also cover the state of the industry, principles of innovation and commercialisation, leadership and management strategies.
We would like to acknowledge the industry partners including BioCina, CSL Limited, Nourish Ingredients, Vicura, Medtec Pharma, Peats Soil and Garden Supplies, GPN Vaccines, MAXM, The Hygiene Co, and Verticalfuture.
